Description

Remove Old Coatings Before Refinishing Wood

CUTEK® Wood Stripper (formerly CUTEK® CD33 Naked) is a powerful and user-friendly paint and surface coating remover designed to strip existing coatings from exterior wood.

It effectively removes multiple layers of commonly used wood finishes including:

  • Latex paints
  • Wood stains
  • Varnishes
  • Linseed oil coatings
  • Acrylic coatings
  • Other film-forming finishes

Removing old coatings is essential before applying Cutek Extreme Wood Oil, as existing finishes can prevent the oil from penetrating properly into the wood.

Safe Alternative to Harsh Strippers

CUTEK® Wood Stripper provides powerful stripping performance while avoiding dangerous chemicals commonly found in traditional paint strippers such as methylene chloride and NMP.

This makes it a safer and more practical option for DIY homeowners and professionals working on exterior wood restoration.

Typical Uses

CUTEK® Wood Stripper is commonly used for:

  • Removing paint and coatings from wood
  • Removing weathered deck stains
  • Preparing decks for refinishing
  • Removing multiple layers of old coatings

It can also remove coatings from:

  • Metal surfaces
  • Brick
  • Masonry

Why Removing Old Deck Stain Is Important

When a deck has been coated with paints, stains or sealers, new finishes cannot properly penetrate the wood. This often causes uneven colour, peeling finishes and poor durability.

Using a dedicated stripper like Cutek Wood Stripper removes these coatings and prepares the wood so Cutek Extreme Wood Oil can penetrate deeply into the grain.

Proper stripping improves:

  • Oil penetration
  • Finish durability
  • Even colour appearance
  • Long-term protection of exterior wood

Coverage

Typical spreading rate is approximately:

120 sq ft per gallon

Coverage may vary depending on:

  • Type of coating being removed
  • Thickness of the coating
  • Number of coating layers

Always perform a test patch before starting the full project.

How to Apply

Step 1 – Prepare

Because coatings can vary significantly, it is essential to test CUTEK® Wood Stripper before starting your project.

Testing will help determine:

  • reaction time
  • coverage
  • number of applications required

NOTE: Thick paint or heavy film-forming coatings may require multiple applications.

Ensure all surrounding surfaces and vegetation are protected before application.

Step 2 – Apply Stripper

Apply CUTEK® Wood Stripper evenly using:

  • Brush
  • Roller
  • Paint pad applicator

Apply to dry wood, working the stripper into the grain.

Reaction time is approximately 30–60 minutes.

Keep the surface wet and active by:

  • applying additional stripper
  • agitating the area with a brush or pad

Test periodically with a paint scraper to check if the coating is lifting cleanly.

Start by stripping a small test area (about 10 sq ft) to refine your technique.

⚠ Surfaces become slippery during application — do not walk on treated areas.

Step 3 – Remove Coating

Once the coating has loosened, rinse thoroughly using a pressure washer set to approximately 50 bar (750 psi) with a fan tip.

⚠ A garden hose is not sufficient for removal.

Use caution to avoid damaging the wood fibers.

Do not use turbojet nozzles on wood.

Clean methodically from the lowest point upward using long strokes in the direction of the grain.

Cleaning from the top first may cause loosened coatings below to become sticky and harder to remove.

After Stripping

After removing coatings, the wood should be treated with Cutek Wood Reviver.

Reviver helps:

  • neutralize remaining stripper residue
  • restore natural wood colour
  • rejuvenate the wood grain

Always follow with Cutek Extreme Wood Oil once the wood has dried.

Some wood species may develop raised grain after stripping, which can be smoothed with light sanding or a poly pad.

Clean-Up and Disposal

Equipment can be cleaned using:

  • Cutek QuickClean
  • soap or detergent
  • water

Dispose of wash water and containers according to local regulations.

Safety and Precautions

Before using the product, review the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and ensure proper safety equipment is used.
